Resumen del viaje

He tardado en escribir el post por que entre que me he tenido que poner al dia en la universidad y el gimnasio, es que estaba destrozado... ¡la vuelta ha sido un tanto intensa! Y ya que estaba pues he esperado a tener preparadas algunas fotos (una "pequeña" selección que he hecho de las más de 700 que hice en el viaje). Os dejo para empezar las fotos:

USA trip

Os hago un resumen del viaje. Tras un viaje bastante agradable (considerando el número de horas fue bastante ligero), pasamos los primeros días en el estado de Vermont, el decimotercer estado, el primero en unirse tras los doce originales. Llegamos un viernes por la noche a nuestro destino final, South Royalton, con nuestro flamante Toyota rojo alquilado. Por allí nos lo tomamos con calma, el primer día tomamos un brunch alucinante (sirope de arce incluido) en un sitio cercano, incluso le hice una foto (que podéis ver en el álbum). También hicimos una excursión a pie cerca del pueblo, por la montaña. El paisaje, todavía nevado, me recordaba mucho a Finlandia, solo que no existía el inconveniente del idioma. Otro día hicimos una excursión a ciudades cercanas un poco más conocidas, Burlington, Montpelier y Hannover. Las ciudades no son demasiado impresionantes la verdad, preferiría haber visto más naturaleza, pero en dos días no daba mucho tiempo a más.

Ya el lunes por la mañana salimos de vuelta a Boston para dejar el coche y coger un autobús en dirección a NY. El autobús de la compañía china Fung Wah, de la que escuche algunos comentarios regulares, pero que a mi no me ocasionó ningún problema. También hay que decir que los autobuses de USA suelen ser un poco mejores que a lo que estoy acostumbrado en España (tienen incluso conexión wifi). El chino sin embargo no, pero era el más barato, $15 por ir de Boston a NY o al revés. Entre que teníamos que ir a Boston y luego coger el autobús, y que al entrar en NY nos pilló un atasco, acabamos llegando de noche. Ese día cogimos comida para llevar de un restaurante vietnamita y yo me di un paseo por la zona del puente de Brooklyn y el sur de Manhattan.

El resto de días era siempre más o menos igual, escoger un barrio, visitarlo, visitar a lo mejor algún museo, el Central Park, comer en algún sitio, quizás descansar un rato en el hotel y luego ir a otro barrio, cenar y salir a buscar bares con música en directo (algo que resulto muy fácil para lo que estoy acostumbrado). Algunas de las cosas que visitamos y son recomendables: el ferry a Staten Island (gratuito), no por ver Staten Island, sino solo por dar un paseo en el barco, pasas cerca de la estatua de la libertad (a la que no pude subir :( ) y tienes una bonita imagen de Manhattan. Subir al Empire State, es tan caro como sorprendente, nos costó $20 subir, pero merecía la pena, además conseguí subir a tiempo para el anochecer, lo cual lo hizo más bonito aun. Los museos de Metropolitan Museum of Art y el MoMa son increíbles, nadie debería perdérselos, y me quedé con ganas de visitar el Museum of Natural History, que tenía en exposición el cráneo de un pachycefalosaurus, además de la famosa (y falsa) ballena azul en el hall. Y no se me puede olvidar la visita al MET, una de las operas más famosas del mundo. No soy gran aficionado a la opera, pero esto la verdad es que me encantó, y ni siquiera fue muy caro. Así podría seguir hablando de todos los sitios que visitamos durante largo rato, pero mejor lo dejo para que la gente comente en las fotos de aquellos sitios que más le gusten.

Anécdotas hay alguna, para empezar descubrimos un bar que nos gustó mucho y fuimos varios días. Todos los días ponían música en directo de algún grupo, yo me acerqué ha hablar con los músicos en algunas ocasiones. Me gustó especialmente la música de Colin Smith (http://colinsmithmusic.com/), y aunque todavía le queda mejorar también la de Rasan Allbritton (http://myspace.com/rasanmusic), de ambas podéis conseguir la música para escucharla en sus páginas. Además me hice amigo de un Neoyorkino negro de 2 metros y pico, que decidió ayudarme a llegar a mi destino cuando miraba en el metro un mapa de las paradas. No necesitaba ayuda, pero no está mal socializar un poco. Resulta que vive en el centro de Manhattan y me dio su tarjeta de contacto para que le llamase, cosa que no hice por que no tuve tiempo. Resulta que el tipo, al que llamaremos J. trabaja como Jefe Ejecutivo de una editorial de música... me he intentado poner en contacto por email, hasta ahora sin suerte.

Y algo que me hace gracia aunque es totalmente irrelevante. Sin motivo mientras paseábamos por mitad de Times Square por la noche, unas señoras quisieron hacer un high five al más puro estilo de la serie How I Met Your Mother. ¡Creo que estaban un poco borrachas! XD Y ya que menciono tal serie de televisión (para quien no lo sepa una SitCom (comedia ligera) muy divertida que recomiendo encarecidamente), visité el bar en el que se basaron los productores para hacer el de la serie. Se llama McGee's y está en la calle W55th, entre la 8th y Broadway St. por si queréis ir el día que paséis por allí. Tienen un cuadro de la serie a la entrada, como podéis ver en una de las fotos.

Ha sido un viaje genial, me lo he pasado muy bien y NYC me ha encantado; aunque es una ciudad enorme, a mi no me agobiaba como lo hace Madrid o Londres. Sin duda tendré que volver allí antes o después, para terminar de ver aquellas cosas que no he podido ver, ¡y quizás revisitar algunos sitios! Allí empezaré el roadtrip de costa a costa cuando lo haga :D

Llegada a EEUU

Al fin estoy aquí. La verdad es que todo ha sido más fácil de lo esperable, y hasta ahora todo ha salido redondo. Los aviones han llegado no a su hora sino antes (saliamos a las 10:40 de Sevilla y llegamos a Boston en menos de 12 horas, sobre las 9:30 de la noche en Sevilla), los controles de seguridad han sido ligeros (no por ello menos eficaces) y en absoluto problemáticos. El Toyota Corolla rojo que nos ha tocado está muy nuevo y resulta un coche muy agradable de conducir (especialmente con el tema de la velocidad de crucero, que aunque lo conocía, nunca había tenido oportunidad de usarlo). El tema de las marchas, aunque un poco sorprendente al principio, es lo más fácil que he visto jamás. Y la llegada a South Royalton no ha tenido ninguna incidencia ni interés, excepto el atasco a la salida de Boston... (normal si pensáis que esta semana es fiesta en EEUU)

El jet-lag lo estoy sufriendo ahora mismo, de mientras escribo. Ayer me acosté a las 10:30 de la noche y estoy en planta a las 5 de la madrugada sin ganas de dormir. La buena noticia es que veré amanecer y haré alguna foto...

Por lo demás todavía no hay mucho que contar, alegría de reencontrarnos los amigos, mucho que contar... lo típico. Ya ire poniendo más cosas cuando pueda, ¡para empezar hoy vamos a tomar un brunch que se me hace la boca agua nada más que de pensarlo!

Future USA Trip

There's barely 3 days left to go to USA, so I don't think I'm gonna be publishing a lot this days. Although I'm not that sure, maybe, in those times while I'm traveling with the car or the bus, I might feel like writing, and later on publish it, maybe with some photos too.

I'll now sum up a bit the idea of the travel, and tell adventures some other time. To begin with, we are going to Boston, MA via Madrid. There we'll pick up a rented car (one of those Toyotas that suffered the gas pedal problem xD) to go to the small town of South Royalton, VT. We'll spend 4 days there, first one being the day we arrive, two other that we will use to know the surroundings and the last one to leave back to Boston. Unluckily we will be unable to visit Canada, although I was hoping I could play some Curling...

Back in Boston we'll leave the car and take a Bus from the Fungh Chung Wa enterprise, or something similar... It's a Chinese bus company that goes from Boston (and other cities) to ChinaTown in NY for 15$. As our hotel is in the same 'hood it's quite the best option for us (I've been already learning some basic stuff to say in Chinese :P). Once there, we will get set up in the hotel and go walking somewhere, and so it'll be the rest of the trip. Walking around Manhattan non-stop. For the time being I'm reading a guide to NYC, so I know most of the things that we should be seeing between other tips. But obviously we'll see the most touristy places. And let's see if we are lucky and we can get up the Statue of Liberty, that as I discovered recently, only 10 persons can go up the more than 300 steps at the same time to watch from the crown. And for doing that, you need to reserve the tickets through the internet the same day you go.

But anyway, I'll tell more things once they happen. And I'll post photos of course :D

Futuro viaje a EEUU

Me quedan apenas 3 días para partir a las Américas, así que el ritmo del blog va a decaer un poco. Aunque no estoy seguro, a lo mejor, en los ratos de viaje en coche y bus me da por escribir algún post sobre el viaje y en cuanto tenga tiempo lo subo a internet, quizás con fotos incluso.

Resumo un poco la idea del viaje y ya relataré aventuras en otro momento. Para empezar viajamos a Boston (en el estado de Massachusett), haciendo escala en Madrid. Allí cogeremos un coche que tenemos alquilado (un Toyota de esos que sufrieron lo del pedal acelerador [eng] XD) y pasaremos a ir al pequeño pueblo de South Royalton (en el estado de Vermont). Pasaremos los primeros 4 días allí, el día que llegamos, un par que daremos vueltas con el coche por los alrededores y el cuarto que volveremos a Boston. Por desgracia no tendremos tiempo de acercarnos a Canadá, con las ganas que tenía de echar unas partiditas de Curling...

En Boston dejaremos el coche y cogeremos un autobús de la empresa Fungh Chung Wa, o algo así... Una empresa de autobuses chinos que llevan desde Boston (y otras ciudades) al barrio chino de NY por 15$. Como nuestro hotel está en el mismo barrio chino nos viene muy bien el autobús (ya he aprendido algunas frases básicas en chino :P). Ya cuando lleguemos nos instalamos y salimos a dar una vuelta, y así pasaremos el resto del viaje. Andando por Manhattan sin parar. Estoy en proceso de leerme una guía de la ciudad, para poder ir a visitar las cosas que nos resulten más interesantes. Pero por lo menos veremos lo típico. Y a ver si tenemos suerte y somos de los pocos turistas que pueden subir los más de 300 escalones hasta la corona de la estatua de la libertad, que según he descubierto recientemente solo 10 personas (a cada vez) pueden subir arriba del todo, y hay que reservar previamente en internet (las reservas salen para cada día más o menos).

Pero bueno, ya contaré más historias del viaje cuando ocurran. Y pondré fotos por supuesto :D

The Cosmonaut

Not long ago I found this movie project and I couldn't stop myself from advertising it, as I love the idea around it. Let's sum it up. The movie will be published under a Creative Commons license, so everyone will be able to share it, see it and even edit it. In order to get the money to make the movie, the authors are offering something that as far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong) it's completely new and has never been done before. They let everyone to be a "producer" for a small amount of money. You won't really be a real producer, we could call it more like a passive producer. You'll put some money and you will appear in the credits (they'll be long, really long) and get the producer package (it includes stickers, one badge and a signed paper stipulating your position in the movie). There's some other merchandising, of course, helping way more to make the film.

As of today, they've got 1846 producers and some trailers you can watch in their web page. By the way, you can get bigger roles in the movie; if you give 1000€ or more you get to be an investor, owning a certain percentage of the movie (only 26% in sale).

I uploaded a photo with the content of the package sent (without stickers), and a pin from a U.R.S.S. space mission that I bought separately (it's small but really cool).

El Cosmonauta

Hace no mucho descubrí este proyecto de cine y no he podido evitar el hacerle publicidad, pues me gusta mucho la idea que lo envuelve. Os la resumo, se trata de una película que será publicada con una licencia Creative Commons [en inglés] para que todo el mundo la pueda ver, compartir e incluso usar y editar. A su vez, para ganar dinero, los creadores han ofrecido algo que (que alguien me corrija si me equivoco) no se había hecho nunca. Esto es ofrecer el puesto de "productor" por una pequeña cantidad de dinero. En realidad no ejercerás de productor real, podríamos decir que es más bien el papel de un productor pasivo. Pones dinero para el proyecto, y a cambio sale tu nombre en los títulos (van a ser unos créditos muy largos) y te envían el paquete del productor (compuesto por una chapa, pegatinas y un papel firmado indicando tu papel en la película como productor). Por supuesto, puedes comprar merchandising ayudando en mayor medida a la realización de la película.

A día de hoy han conseguido 1846 productores y ya tienen varios trailer que podéis ver en su página web. Por cierto, también puedes llegar a ejercer un papel más importante en la película, si ayudas al proyecto con 1000€ o más te conviertes en inversor, y te haces dueño de un cierto porcentaje de la película (solo tienen en venta el 26%).

Os adjunto una foto con lo que envían (no están las pegatinas), y un pin de una de las misiones espaciales de la U.R.S.S. que compré aparte (es pequeñito pero está muy chulo).

Time of changes

In the world history there's never been a time in which so many changes have been going on as it is right now. The acceptance towards change, the reflexive search of alternate futures is key to the survival of civilization and maybe human beings. Ours is the first generation that has been raised with the ideas of Sci-Fi.

We are in a really important time of our evolution as species, we need to adapt as well as possible to all the changes we have been living for a while now. The Sagan's quotation I've wrote before is from his book "Broca's brain", published for the first time in 1974. Already then he managed to notice all the changes coming to the human society. Today it's obvious. How the day of tomorrow's going to be depends solely in how we do things today.

In my humble opinion, we're fucked, although time to time we can see some hope. We've got lot to improve, and a lot to do.

Época de cambios

En toda la historia del mundo no ha habido ninguna época en la que se hayan producido tantos cambios como en ésta. La predisposición al cambio, la búsqueda reflexiva de futuros alternativos es la clave para la supervivencia de la civilización y tal vez de la especie humana. La nuestra es la primera generación que se ha desarrollado con las ideas de la ciencia ficción.

Estamos en un momento crítico en nuestra evolución como especie, necesitamos adaptarnos lo mejor posible a todos los cambios que llevamos varias décadas acumulando. El texto de Sagan que os he copiado es de su libro "El cerebro de Broca", publicado por primera vez en 1974. Ya por entonces Sagan veía el cambio que se avecinaba. Hoy es evidente. Cómo será el día de mañana depende de cómo hagamos las cosas hoy.

Según mi humilde opinión, vamos de culo, aunque de vez en cuando se vea algo de esperanza. Tenemos que mejorar mucho.

The Sauna

The sauna is between the most known habits from Finland, something that is taken really seriously by the inhabitants, so much that they even have a cultural asociation. Before I start telling you my stories, I give you the link to the Wikipedia article about the sauna, where you can find much more information than what I can tell you. Anyway, there's lots of people coming to the blog, searching for stuff about the sauna (mostly photos ¬¬) and I see Wikipedia has some restrictive rules about how to use a sauna, so I'm gonna give you my opinion and tell you about my experiences.

I'll start talking about the sauna in Finland, another time, in another post, I'll talk about the sauna in Spain. There's no building in Finland which has no sauna, usually there's one common sauna for everyone living in that building and you can reserve some time to use it by your own. There's also some days that you can use them without reserving it, with times separated for women and men. But there are some other buildings that have a sauna per apartment, anyway it's not that common since saunas take a lot of electricity. In both cases the use of the sauna is the same, it's a heater with stones on the top, where you throw water to get the steam. The only difference is the size of the radiator and the number of stones. There's usually a bucket and something similar to a big spoon to get the water out of the bucket into the stones. Also those typical wooden benches with different levels, if you want to "suffer" a bit more (the higher, the hotter).

The inside of a sauna

I do not have many photos of the inside of a sauna. Usually it is on and there's naked people inside, so it wouldn't be that polite to take photos, nor polite neither good for the camera! Actually, that photo is the only one I've got. And now that I mentioned it, about the nakedness in the sauna, Finnish people are really open minded about it, the sauna it's for purification of the body, it has nothing to do with sexuality. So it is common to share the sauna with your family, or closest friends and not to make different turns for both sexes. Although in case it is a mixed public sauna, you are obliged to have a towel or swimsuit. The other way around, no one is obliged to be naked, but it's not really well seen; you are going there to sweat, to clean yourself, so the clothes get in the way, and it gets really dirty. To have a swimsuit in the sauna, is one of those things tourists often do.

Other things about the sauna, well, normally there is another room to sit down and rest (also drink and change your clothes) and also some showers. If there's no shower that means that there's a lake close by. It is really important to have showers before going to the sauna, also after the sauna, and in the meantime! Every time you get a rest of the sauna, it is good (and nice) to have a quick shower (just water). If there's no shower, you've got the water from the buckets, so you can throw some over your head. If nothing is available, I bet you can throw yourself into the lake and swim for a little while. Also it is common to see people with soap, the Finns normally take a shower after the last time they got inside the sauna.

What about the time you must be inside the sauna? There's no more rules than never to stay longer than you want and feel okay. You've gotta guess how long you want to stay and how many times you want to go inside the sauna. That's completely personal. Be careful with braveness demonstrations, staying too long in the sauna may be dangerous, let the Finns show their sisu with their competitions.

There's few things left to tell, not all saunas are electric, there are many (usually far from civilization) that are wood powered. They are harder to use (you've gotta chop the wood) and it takes longer to warm up (start making the fire like half an hour to one hour before you want to use the sauna), but they have something special on them that makes them nice and worthwhile. For example, depending on the wood you use, the sauna will have different kind of smells. You can also fake the smell in electric saunas with a special liquid really common in Finland, they are supposed to be mixed with the water you'll use in the stones, and sometimes they come with a special stone with holes where you can pour the liquid too. A homemade trick is to use beer on the stone (not much, just a little), and it will smell something similar to toast bread, I loved that!

And to finish with this long post, I'm gonna tell you two Finnish habits related to sauna. First, easy and known, in the winter you can bath in a frozen lake (which previously had a hole made), or you throw yourself into the snow. I did it, it was okay, but nothing really great, it's more the fun of doing it with friends (by the way, don't stay longer than a minute in the water, usually a few seconds are more than enough, really, it could get bad). I still prefer to swim in a lake in the summer before the sauna. The second habit is less known, not done by tourists. It's about using some branches as a whip on yourself, it's a special kind of branch, don't remember the tree, but they say it is really good for the skin. I never tried, and I don't miss the idea of trying. You can see in the previous photo the branches in the bottom-right corner.

Well, it was long, but I had to explain before I could really complain explain my experiences related to saunas in Spain.
